What is an Elliptical Machine?
An Elliptical Machine, also known as an Elliptical trainer is a low impact stationary fitness device that resembles climbing stairs, walking or jogging. Your feet are positioned in what is called an Ellipse (hence the name Elliptical), which are two big pedals on the bottom of the machine and they can move either front or backwards, it all depends on how you push it. This is a great way for you to work both your upper body as well as the your lower body because the machine has handles that you can grab onto and you can push them back and forth giving you a great full body workout.
Benefits of Elliptical Machines
There are many benefits to using an Elliptical Machine. As opposed to the Treadmill where you are running and creating an impact every time you take a step, the Elliptical Machine only requires you two push on the big pedals and this create no impact when you are pushing down giving you a huge break on your knees and ankles. Most people always use this device as a way to take a break from their regular treadmill running one or two times a week so they can rest their joints. Another great benefit is that it keeps your back straight due to how the machine is built. Since you have to stand and grab the handles it forces you to keep your back straight therefore perfecting your posture. Also, of course due to this dual action of pedaling and pushing the handles it gives you a great full body workout where researches have seen that it burns just as many calories as if you were using the treadmill or exercise bike. Finally, it is also a great tool to use at home because since you are pushing on the pedals it does not create as much noise as the treadmill where you are taking many steps. This of course comes in handy if you are in an apartment building and do not want to upset your neighbors.
How to choose the Best Elliptical Machine
Always ask yourself how much you want to spend, where you want to place it on your home, and who will be using this machine. Of course if this is your first time buying an Elliptical machine then I wouldn’t suggest you spend more than $750 on it, however, for the seasoned user, you can spend a lot more depending on how many times a week you are going to use it.
Also, if you know you are only going to use it twice or three times a week I wouldn’t suggest you spend that much, but if you are buying with the intention that a whole family will use it then I would definitely suggest you invest in one that has great warranty and that will last for a long time.
